Intermountain Health Is Freezing Its Pension. Here Is What Utah Caregivers Need to Know.
Published by Nico | Momentum Wealth | retiremomentum.com
If you work for Intermountain Health, you have probably already heard the news. On January 20th, the board of trustees announced that the pension plan will be frozen on December 31, 2026. No new pension benefits will be earned after that date. Instead, affected caregivers will move fully into a 401(k)-based retirement program.
That is a big deal. And I want to talk about it honestly, because a lot of people I have spoken with are somewhere between confused and frustrated right now. That is completely fair.
Let me break down what this actually means, and what you should be thinking about before the end of the year.
What Actually Happened
Intermountain Health started its pension plan back in 1975. It was closed to new employees in 2020, so the people affected now are those who joined before that cutoff. That is roughly one out of every three caregivers across the organization.
The board cited ongoing financial pressure, including lower government reimbursement rates, inflation, and market volatility, as the reasons behind the decision. They are not alone in this. Ninety-seven percent of healthcare organizations in the United States have already moved away from pensions. Intermountain is following a trend that has been building for decades.
Here is the important thing to understand right now: the pension benefit you have already earned is not going away. It is legally protected under federal law and held in a trust. What is changing is that you will stop earning new pension benefits after December 31, 2026.
What It Means Depending on Where You Are
If you are still working at Intermountain Health, you have until the end of 2026 to keep accruing pension benefits. After that, your retirement accumulation shifts fully to your 401(k). Intermountain has said they will add a 2% automatic contribution to affected caregivers’ 401(k) plans, and they are also creating a new Retiree Medical Savings Account as part of the transition. Those are not nothing, but they are also not a pension.
If you are close to retirement, the freeze date matters. Depending on how much you have already built in your pension and how close you are to your target retirement age, this could change the math on your income plan significantly. A pension gave you a predictable monthly check for life. A 401(k) depends on market performance and how you draw it down. Those are two very different things to plan around.
If you have already retired from Intermountain Health, your earned pension benefit is secure. This announcement does not affect what you are already receiving or what you are entitled to.
The Real Question Nobody Is Asking Out Loud
The pension was built around one promise: a guaranteed paycheck for the rest of your life. That promise is not going away for what you have already earned. But it is no longer the foundation of what comes next.
For a lot of Intermountain caregivers, that pension was the anchor of their retirement income plan. With that anchor shifting, everything else needs to be looked at. Social Security timing. 401(k) contributions between now and retirement. How you will cover healthcare costs. What your withdrawal strategy looks like once you stop working.
This is not a reason to panic. But it is a reason to get clarity.
